What can I help you with? I specialize in travel writing, non-fiction books, and Japan-related features on topics that have ranged from sustainability to craftspeople. I also write haiku and haibun, and work on short scripts. I'm open to branded content projects, if there's a strong focus on storytelling. I'm happy to travel in Japan or elsewhere in Asia on assignment.

Photos? I'm a writer. However, I'm more than happy to introduce you to some of the photographers I've been fortunate to have worked with and I can help source images from interviewees and other sources.

What don't I do? I get requests to help out with lots of other things, but I'm really not the person you want to attend finance seminars, write conference reports, act as a fixer, comment on the latest earthquake/typhoon/financial crisis to hit Japan, churn out SEO-rich content, set up a video feed, get paid in "exposure," translate brochures, give guided tours, or teach English. I'm a writer.

PR? Press trips and freebies aren't my thing, but I'm happy to hear story ideas or any updates you have about new openings and other noteworthy events.

New writer? Student? School? If you have any questions about freelancing or becoming a writer, you are more than welcome to get in touch. I've mentored aspiring writers for the mentorship program of the Society of Writers, Editors and Translators (Japan) and I run my own mentoring sessions in return for donations to worthwhile causes. Alternatively, have a look at this post I wrote about the business of being a freelance writer in Japan. I'm also happy to visit schools to give author talks and writing workshops. That said, I'm afraid I'm not the best person to shadow for a day; I spend most of my time either sat at my desk, napping with the dog, or out of Tokyo.
